Lauren Hunter is Henrietta Lange's replacement as the Operations Manager for the Office Special Projects. She was personally designated by Henriettta Lange as her successor as Hetty had personally adopted her from an orphange when Hunter was very young.
Agent Hunter is a crack shot with the ability to concentrate fire in a tight grouping while on the practice range, but she concealed this fact in Callen's presence.
Agent Hunter is respected enough by Director Vance and Hetty to have been read into Operation Comescu.
She briefly served as Hetty's temporary replacement until Hetty returned. After Hetty returned, she left command of ops and presumably went on several top secret missions for the U.S goverment.
She was on a deep undercover assignment in an undisclosed country, until The Chameleon who rigged her car with a bomb, killing her. Her ghost was later seen talking to Hetty in the morgue, revealing that like Callen, Hetty had taken care of Hunter when she was seven while also stating that the first time she'd held onto Hetty's hand, Hunter hadn't been able to let go for three days.

Trivia
- Lauren Hunter's name is similar to the name of the actress that plays Hetty, Linda Hunt. This may have been a play on the part of the writers, especially when Agent Hunter says that she knows Hetty, "better than you could imagine." Alternatively the character's name could be an homage to both Linda Hunt and Lauren Holly who portrayed Director of NCIS Jenny Shepard in the parent series.
- While Lauren Hunter is from the U.S, Claire Forlani is originally from the U.K.
- Hunter was a skilled linguistics expert, which made her an asset to NCIS. She has been seen speaking Russian, German, Italian, French, and Romani with Callen, although it is unknown if she speaks additional languages. It is possible she learned these languages, or at least was encouraged to learn them, from Hetty, who is also skilled in many languages.
- Lauren Hunter is the only recurring character was seen in a season premiere and final.
- Despite her death, Lauren Hunter is mentioned two times in Season 4.
